Turkey

Turkey has a great music history. One of its most interesting genres for you might be Anatolian rock. This genre is a type of rock that includes traditional Turkish folk music and to this date is widely unknown with many rare records. One of the most influential artists here was Erkin Koray, who started by covering Western artists like Elvis Presley but through his integration of Turkish instruments and sounds he created a new Anatolian sound.

Among the best artists to perfect that sound was Baris Manco. A great example of that is his 1971 album Dünden Bugüne, which has very unique rhythms and melodies that still sound modern today, with intense guitars and drums and great loops. In the 1980s, many Anatolian rock songs were banned and the genre lost popularity, which makes it so unknown until this date. This is why it is perfect for uncovering hidden and forgotten gems of incredible music – the newsletter is dedicated to exploring more of it.
