Soviet Union

Much of Soviet music always had a vibe of underground and resistance, which makes it an excellent place to discover super rare gems. In the Soviet Union officially only music that was approved by the state was allowed, which meant that there was not much room for alternative genres and experimentation. But this created an underground scene of great musicians who did their own thing, standing out globally with their experimental and creative sound.

A lot of the published music here were distributed on selfmade cassette tapes, often with a raw lofi sound that today can be appreciated as sounding particularly vintage. This underground Soviet music was often influenced by punk and new wave movements from the West, but implemented its own spin and atmosphere on these influences. If you want to dig deeper than everyone else, music from the Soviet Union is where you can find truly hidden gems, for which the newsletter could help you.
