Soviet Ballads

If you are interested in a music representation of a certain feeling of Soviet nostalgia, as well as music experimentation, Soviet Ballads could be very interesting. They typically are very emotional songs that combined Soviet values and ideals with a fusion of genres growing more popular in the 70s – such as disco, rock, electronica. Very different from typical propaganda songs, these Soviet Ballads had a heartfelt sound that was also truly original.

To start with one of the most classic choices, “Зеркало Души” by Алла Пугачева is a great record. Her songs capture the feelings of that era, with a creative pop music sound. You can find a more minimalistic and soft style on Bulat Okudzhava – “Песни и романсы” (1969), which is great for you if you prefer a style that is a bit simpler but still sounds deep. To check out an exceptional record, “Путешествие” (1986) by Зигмарс Лиепиньш is a great choice, with a great fusion sound and a true example of this genre.

The state record label Мелодия has released so many incredible records, some went under the radar of the mainstream, especially artists who tried put a novel spin on the traditional style. Nowadays many of these records remain rare, often outside of the radar of Western music appreciators. The newsletter will fill this gap by including information on great music from the Soviet era that can truly expand your musical horizon.
