Germany’s music scene is a great place to explore if you are interested in electronic sounds and more mechanic, colder atmospheres. A great example for the unique German sound is Krautrock, a genre that was the outcome of West Germany’s further development of popular psychedelic rock music from the 1960s. Many bands, most famously Can and Neu!, incorporated electronics and created new song structures, resulting in a creative and challenging sound that is definitely worth exploring.
One of the later German classics is Trans-Europe Express (1977) by Kraftwerk. This album created a new definition of electronic music. Especially its robotic aesthetic and minimalism became a strong influence for later genres like hip hop and techno. And there is a lot below the surface of German music around that time, which the newsletter will dive deeper into.
