Chile is another one of those countries that show you how awesome it is to have a global perspective on music, with the many different styles of different regions. Chile is particularly great for exploring rock music influenced by indigenous sounds and traditional folk elements. This often incorporated lots of flute, pipes and wind instruments and very strong percussion grooves – often much ahead of their time.
The go-to band for exploring Chilean folk-rock are Los Jaivas, who were some of the earliest and best artist to combine traditional sounds with the growing popular rock sound in the United States in the 1960s. After the Chilean military coup in 1973, many of the greatest bands flew into exile while others continued to create music in the underground and a very interesting, globally influenced Chilean underground music scene emerged. Bands like Los Blops and Congreso were great examples of that. Chile is great for finding rare, hidden gems, and the newsletter has a particular focus on Latin America, including Chile.
